Where We've Been
SamTrans continues to make meaningful progress toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for San Mateo County. Since our last report, we have expanded our zero-emission fleet, improved sustainable travel options and made strategic investments that will benefit our communities for years to come.
By the end of fiscal year 2025, SamTrans had put 16 battery-electric buses and 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses into service. These vehicles are an important step in modernizing our fleet and reducing emissions from transit operations. And for the first time in our history, we achieved net-zero criteria air pollutants – a milestone that reflects the broader impact of cleaner transit and fewer car trips across the region.
As ridership grew, so did the environmental benefits of transit. SamTrans recorded its lowest carbon footprint per ride since before the pandemic, showing how increased ridership and cleaner buses work together to reduce emissions. We also continued building the infrastructure needed to support a fully zero-emission fleet, including a new hydrogen fueling station at North Base and the design of a 37-battery electric bus charging structure at South Base.
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond our fleet. We expanded service to support cleaner travel choices, including the launch of EPX with zero-emission buses and the continued growth of our on-demand service, Ride Plus. We are also preparing to move into a new headquarters that will give employees better access to transit and other commuting options, while encouraging alternatives to driving alone.
These efforts reflect SamTrans’ ongoing commitment to providing reliable, sustainable and accessible transportation.
