Where We've Been
SamTrans' commitment to sustainability extends beyond its fleet and daily operations. Across the organization, the District is advancing projects and programs that strengthen resilience, expand access, and promote sustainable choices for employees and the communities it serves.
Sustainability is integral to the District's 10-Year Strategic Plan, which establishes a vision for creating a more equitable and sustainable region. The plan guides investments in service, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship through 2035.
Key initiatives include:
- North Base Flood Protection Project: Exploring solutions to protect the District's largest maintenance and operations facility from sea level rise, helping ensure uninterrupted service in the future.
- Reimagine Dumbarton: Exploring the revitalization of an unused rail corridor to increase regional access and provide new public and active transportation options in southern San Mateo County.
- Bus Stop Improvement Project: Designing and deploying new amenities at bus stops across the county, with a focus on underserved communities and areas subject to increasingly warmer temperatures.
SamTrans also invests in employee engagement to foster a culture of sustainability. Recent events include America Recycles Day (November 2023), an E-Bike Day Fair at South Base (April 2024) promoting active transportation, and an Earth Day "Do Not Drive" event (April 2025) promoting transit, carpooling, walking, and biking. Together, these initiatives reflect SamTrans' belief that sustainability is not a single project or milestone, but a continuous journey routed through the District’s plans, operations, and ongoing service.
